Fillings to Blend Perfectly with Your Smile

Through the years, fillings at the dentist have included gold, silver/mercury amalgam, porcelain, and composite. The first two of these have fallen by the wayside for different reasons. But, fillings still must withstand the extreme forces of chewing. In the back of the mouth, for example, biting pressures can reach 750 pounds per square inch!

The newer dental filling materials we use in our office include ceramic and composite ceramic compounds. These newer materials mimic the appearance of natural teeth. They started out just being used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is most important. But with the evolution and current advances in dental materials, they are now used routinely on the back teeth, depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay.

However, if there is too much lost tooth structure, and a regular filling would not hold up long-term under the stresses and pressures of chewing, Dr. Markel may recommend a crown (cap) which covers and protects the entire tooth.

Preventative Care

You've heard the expression, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Well, that certainly applies to your teeth and dental health.

We know coming to the dentist is not everyone's favorite thing to do, so if it's been a while, know that we for sure won't beat you up about it. We're just glad you're coming in now! It's never too late to start the process of getting you back to good health.

So, if it's been some time since your last dental visit, the place to start, if nothing hurts at the time, is to make an appointment with our hygienist (410-987-1600). She also loves what she does and will try her best to make your time with her pleasant and stress-free.
